Pepperdine College is saddened to announce the passing of Government Vice Chancellor
Emeritus Lawrence “Larry” D. Hornbaker (MBA ’76, EdD ’86).
Hornbaker was employed by Pepperdine in 1969 as the vice president for development with
the target of raising the money to grow Pepperdine’s footprint from the initial Los
Angeles campus to Malibu after the college received a donation of 138 acres of undeveloped
ranch land in Malibu by users of the Adamson and Rindge people. In just more than two
yrs, Hornbaker and the growth group elevated $24.6 million for the campus’ development
and eventual opening in Malibu in 1972.
“In 2022 Pepperdine celebrated the 50th anniversary of the go from the first Los Angeles campus to Malibu,” states Pepperdine
president Jim Gash (JD ’93). “Fundamental to that shift was Larry Hornbaker, who gathered
the mates and resources to assure the realization of our long run campus house. When we
are saddened by his passing, we are privileged to acknowledge and honor his contributions
to the College and the legacy he has still left guiding for long run generations of Waves.”
Through Hornbaker’s 33-calendar year tenure at Pepperdine, he served in different capacities
that performed a significant job in the University’s progression, including vice president
for administration, acting vice president for finance, senior vice president, govt
vice chancellor, and vice chancellor. Past his extraordinary fundraising initiatives,
he was instrumental in the management of signature building assignments on the Malibu
campus, together with the Drescher Graduate Campus, Smothers Theatre, Lindhurst Theatre,
college and employees housing, Lovernich and George Page Residences, the Pendleton Computer
Science Center, and Discipline Heritage Hall.
“As government vice chancellor and the University’s chief improvement officer throughout
the essential a long time of constructing the Malibu campus, Larry Hornbaker was a fearless leader,”
says Sara Jackson (’74), Pepperdine University chancellor. “He assembled a capable
advancement staff and worked tirelessly to see that the Pepperdine Malibu aspiration grew to become
a truth. Handful of know the particular sacrifices he and his spouse, Carol, made all through all those

While he retired in 2002, Hornbaker continued to guidance Pepperdine via different

Hornbaker is survived by his wife, Carol their kids, Deborah, Douglas, David,
and Darin (BSM ’99) six grandchildren and two excellent-grandchildren.
